A garden wall built to stay standing straight
Most garden walls that lean, crack or fall do so for one reason: what is under the ground. A shallow footing, no movement joints, or a wall that is too thin for its height. At RS Kayley Ltd we start every garden wall with a proper concrete footing dug to firm ground, then build the wall to the right thickness for its height and job.
We have been laying brick for over 18 years across Bexleyheath, Welling, Sidcup, Bexley and the surrounding areas. Whether you want a low front wall with piers to finish off a new driveway, a taller boundary wall for privacy, or a retaining wall to level a sloping garden, you deal with Ricky from the first visit to the final clean up.
Garden walls we build
- Front garden walls with piers, copings and space for gates or railings
- Boundary walls between neighbours or along the back of the garden
- Retaining walls for terraced gardens, steps and changes in level
- Raised beds and planters to tie in with a new patio
- Feature walls such as curved walls, decorative brick bonds and BBQ areas
Do I need planning permission for a garden wall?
In most cases, no. Under permitted development rules you can usually build a wall up to 1 metre high next to a road, footpath or highway, and up to 2 metres high elsewhere in the garden. Higher walls, walls at a listed building or in a conservation area may need permission from Bexley Council or Dartford Borough Council. If the wall sits on the boundary line, the Party Wall Act may also apply. We will flag all of this when we come out to quote, so there are no surprises.
How we build it
We set the wall out with you on site, dig and pour the footing, then build in your chosen brick and bond with a damp proof course where needed. Copings or brick-on-edge finish the top so rain runs off rather than soaking in. Longer walls get movement joints so they can expand and contract without cracking. We clear up properly at the end of every day and take all waste away.
